Certifications
The appraisers at Centerpoint Advisors are members
of professional societies that provide certification of
individuals that meet established requirements. Those
certifications that apply specifically to business and securities
valuation are described below.
American Society of Appraisers
The American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is an organization of
appraisal professionals and others in the appraisal profession.
International in structure, it is self-supporting and independent.
The oldest and only major appraisal organization representing all
of the disciplines of appraisal specialists, the Society
originated in 1936 and was incorporated in 1952.
Recognizing the need for the highest professional standards, one
of the main objectives of ASA is to ensure ethical practices and
procedures on the part of its members. The Society is diligent in
its efforts to strengthen and uphold the Principals of Appraisal
Practice and Code of Ethics in order to protect the client.
The ASA awards two professional designations in business
valuation; Accredited Member (AM) and Accredited Senior Appraiser
(ASA). The distinction between these membership categories is the
amount of experience. Two years full-time experience is required
for AM and five years is necessary to receive the ASA designation.
In both cases, the member has demonstrated his/her capability in
the field of business appraisal.
The requirements to receive the ASA designation are:
-
Passing an ethics examination
-
Passing an examination on the Uniform Standards of Professional
Appraisal Practice (USPAP)
-
Passing a rigorous series of four
cumulative examinations covering all aspects of business valuation
-
Approval of two actual appraisal reports by ASA’s International
Board of Examiners
-
Five years of full-time business appraisal experience.
CFA Institutue
The CFA Institutue (CFA)
develops and administers a series of three examinations that lead
to earning the professional designation Chartered Financial
Analyst. Those who earn the CFA designation demonstrate that
they posses the foundation to make well-qualified decisions on
investment securities and portfolio management, and are committed
to professional excellence. In addition to passing the three
levels of examination over a minimum three year period, earning
the CFA designation requires a minimum of three years of
experience in the investment industry. Clients, regulators,
employers, and the general public recognize the CFA designation as
a symbol of integrity and professional excellence in securities
analysis.
CFA’s Professional Conduct Program promotes the highest ethical
and professional standards in the investment industry. CFA
actively monitors its members and candidates for compliance with
CFA Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct and
imposes disciplinary sanctions ranging from private censure to
revocation of membership and/or CFA designation when violations
occur.
